A family with horses, dogs and children of various ages needed a new kitchen for their converted farm building. The space, resembling something from Game of Thrones with its great hall proportions, needed to anchor kitchen, dining and living areas while handling the realities of country life: muddy boots, wet dogs and the practical demands of an active lifestyle alongside elegant entertaining.
Design challenge
The sheer scale could have overwhelmed any standard kitchen approach. At roughly 15 steps between the range cooker and main sink, the workflow was initially impractical for daily cooking. The clients' instinct was to fill the walls with cabinetry, which would have consumed their budget while creating storage they didn't actually need. Additionally, there was nowhere to manage the transition from outdoor activities - meaning muddy boots and wet spaniels would track straight through the kitchen space.
Our solution
Chris proposed a prep sink within the large island to bridge the gap, eliminating countless trips across the kitchen while making meals. Instead of wall-to-wall cabinetry, he suggested open shelving that would add personality while keeping costs sensible. For the boot room, he designed what would become the project's game changer: a tiled dog shower where muddy paws could be cleaned before entering the main house - simple, practical, and transformative.
We designed tall units that stop at the render line, respecting the room's original proportions rather than competing with them. The island - at 1.8 meters wide, was near the maximum size for stone fabrication. Features include a drinks station with bi-fold doors that can stay open during use. The freestanding prep table at the island's end creates a focal point when entering from the living area. We incorporated Neff appliances and Fisher & Paykel refrigeration to handle family scale cooking and entertaining. The boot room includes bench seating, individual wicker baskets for each family member's outdoor gear so no mess or muddy footprints in the kitchen.
The result
The kitchen successfully commands the enormous space without feeling overwhelmed by it. The prep sink and island means multiple cooks can work independently - one at the range, another at the main sink - perfect for a busy family home. The dog shower has proven invaluable for country living. This project demonstrates how avoiding the temptation to simply "fill the space" creates a kitchen that works beautifully now and will continue to serve the family as children grow and life evolves.
