Llangattock

A couple based in Singapore, with Welsh roots, envisioned this listed cottage as their retreat. Accustomed to larger homes with spacious kitchens abroad, they initially wanted substantial storage - tall units throughout and a large American-style refrigerator - not realising this would overwhelm the cottage's modest, characterful space.

Design challenge

The listed building status meant no alterations to windows or doors so working within the existing footprint was non-negotiable. An original stone fireplace was scheduled to be rendered over by the builder as the quickest, cheapest solution. The clients' layout ideas, while understandable, would have created a cramped, dark kitchen at odds with the cottage's character. A particularly low window created an awkward zone that seemed to defy practical use.

Our solution

At the first site meeting, Chris saw the fireplace and immediately knew it had to be saved. Despite some resistance from the builder, Chris convinced both client and builder to restore and raise the arch, making it a defining feature. He designed a cook shelf behind the range for oils and utensils - a detail that adds both function and visual interest. For the problematic low window area, he proposed a bench seat that transforms the awkward space into a reading nook or intimate coffee spot with beautiful valley views.
We pulled the Everhot range forward from the alcove rather than pushing it back - counterintuitive, but crucial for achieving proper storage depth on either side while showcasing the restored fireplace. The island received a wooden worktop and open oak slats on the back, making it feel like a farmhouse table rather than a heavy block of cabinetry. We fitted Fisher & Paykel refrigeration, Siemens appliances, a Shaws Belfast sink, and both a Perrin & Rowe bridge tap and instant hot water tap. Causton sockets maintained period appropriateness. Instead of wall-to-wall tall units, we installed a breakfast cupboard with bi-fold doors that can stay open without looking like an exposed cupboard.

The result

After some initial resistance to Chris's vision - which differed significantly from their original ideas - the clients ended up with almost exactly what he first proposed. The saved fireplace became the kitchen's soul and the builder agreed it worked. As Chris recalls: "It was one of those projects where I felt quite strongly about going a certain way, and through the process of showing them alternatives, we came back to the original design." The relationship with the builder, tested but strengthened by the fireplace discussions, led to further collaborations.
